Environment Our members take part each year in a "Spring Spruce-Up" of Walnut Spring Park, in partnership with the Centre County COG Department of Parks and Recreation, refurbishing a mile-long trail by clearing out debris and applying new bark mulch. In addition, we have purchased a Memorial Tree for Millbrook Marsh in honor of our club's 50th anniversary and planted a tree in honor of Phyllis C. when she became the President of Altrusa International. Literacy Altrusa International has long maintained an interest in literacy. As a local club we have participated in a number of literacy-related projects. We have provided books for children, read aloud to a group of Cub Scouts, donated children's books to Park Forest Day Nursery and donated large-print books to Centre Crest Library. We also encourage early reading by taking part in the "Books for Babies" project, which gives to each new mother at Mount Nittany Medical Center a package of reading materials for herself and her new child. Human Services Our club has demonstrated unwavering support of human service organizations from the time it prepared the Centre County Council for Human Services' first "Human Service Directory," through its ongoing financial support of initiatives such as Meals on Wheels, Keystone Legal Services, the AIDS Project, Family Health Services, the Youth Service Bureau's Juvenile Mentoring Program, the Sight-Loss Support Group, Interfaith Mission, Delta Young Women's Center, the Community Help Centre, House of Care, Strawberry Fields, Inc, Park Forest Day Nursery, and Easter Seals of Pennsylvania. For the love of its community, Centre County Altrusa has participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, United Way's Day of Caring, the Walnut Springs Park Clean-Up Project, and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. UNICEF Cards and Gifts For over a decade our club has supported the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) by selling UNICEF cards and gifts to local residents during the holiday season. Fundraising Each year in March, Altrusa International of Centre County holds "Mystery Night," its annual fundraiser that partners a night of intrigue and mystery with fun and good company in the name of raising money for Altrusa and its grant program. Signature Service Project In 2004 and 2005, our club has sponsored and participated in the Spring Fling Rummage Sale, helping to raise more than $25,000 to support services fulfilled in the Youth Service Bureau's Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program. |
